"Are chest radiographs redundant as a screening tool for lung cancer?"

We are excited to announce the start of our first BSTI essay competition with the ever so interesting thoracic debate evolving around chest radiographs as a screening tool.

 

Who may participate:

This competition is open to:
(a) Medical students/ prospective medical students,
(b) Resident doctors who are not in radiology training
(c) ST1-ST3 radiology registrars.

Prizes will be awarded to the best candidates per cohort - which include monetary prizes! 

Doctors not currently training in the United Kingdom are excluded from this competition as are Consultants and General Practitioners.

Guidance:

Participants are asked to write a short essay of 1500 words to answer the question ‘are chest radiographs redundant as a screening tool for lung cancer?’. Any part of the essay beyond 1500 words will not be assessed.

A basic understanding of medical imaging techniques and their utility should be demonstrated.

Usage and analysis of current literature and understanding of the variation in lung cancer screening programmes should be discussed.

Participants will also be assessed on their written communication. Prose is expected for the majority of the essay and a maximum of one figure or table may be used without affecting the word count.

Referencing should be in Vancouver format. The list of references will not count towards the final word count.

The essays will be screened for usage of artificial intelligence (AI) and plagiarism. Substantial usage of AI and/or plagiarism will result in disqualification and further essays from the same candidate will not be accepted.
